Mar Thoma and Syriac Orthodox Churches were established in the 1930s following migration from the Kerala Coast of India. وأسست مجتمعات مسيحيون مار توما الأرثوذكس كنيستهم الأولى في عام 1930، وذلك بعد هجرتهم من ساحل ولاية كيرالا الهنديَّة.
Even though the Saint Thomas Christians had to compromise their social and religious privileges in the aftermath of Portuguese subjugation, they started reemerging as a powerful community from the 19th century onward. على الرغم من قيام مجتمع مسيحيون مار توما بتقديم بعض التنازلات للإمتيازات الإجتماعية والدينية الخاصة بهم في أعقاب سقوط الحكم البرتغالي في القرن السادس عشر، الا أن المجتمع بدأت بالظهور مجددًا كمجتمع قوي وثري ابتداءًا القرن التاسع عشر فصاعدًا.
But, the population growth of Saint Thomas Christians came down drastically after 1960s, with the lowest birth rate, highest age at marriage, highest family planning user rate, and lowest fertility rate compared to other communities in Kerala. منذ سنوات 1960 عرف مجتمع مسيحيون مار توما تغيرًا جذريًا في النمو السكاني، لدى المجتمع أدنى معدل المواليد، وأعلى سن زواج، وأعلى معدل لتنظيم الأسرة، وأدنى معدل خصوبة مقارنًة مع المجتمعات الأخرى في ولاية كيرالا.
